Stephanie Jutt’s elegant artistry and passionate intellect have inspired musicians and audiences around the world. Her groundbreaking performances of new music, transcriptions, and traditional repertoire have made her a model for adventurous flutists everywhere. As winner of the International Concert Artist Guild Award and the International Pro Musicis Award, Ms. Jutt has been heard in recital around the world, including Paris, Freiburg, Rome, Munich, Lisbon, Bergen, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Boston, San Francisco, and New York. In Wisconsin, Ms. Jutt has appeared in recital on the prestigious series, "Artists at the Pabst" in Milwaukee. As winner of the New York Affiliate Artists Competition, she has been in residence at numerous American cities and universities.
Stephanie Jutt has received major soloist grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music. She received the UW Creative Arts Award, the Emily Mead Bascom-Bell Professorship, in 1995.
She has been a guest artist in the New York Philharmonic's "Prospective Encounters" new music series, performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and with the 92nd Street Y Orchestra. Appearances with American orchestras include the Boston Pops, the Brevard Festival Orchestra, the Madison Symphony and the Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra of Denver.
A lifelong champion of new music, Ms. Jutt has performed many premiere performances, such as the first Madison performance of Gunther Schuller's Flute Concerto, which he conducted with the UW-Madison Symphony in 1992. Ms. Jutt performed the Midwest premiere of the Christopher Rouse Flute Concerto with the Madison Symphony in 1997. In August 2001, Stephanie Jutt performed the premiere performance of David Maslanka’s Songbook for flute and wind orchestra at the National Flute Association annual conference in Dallas, TX. Most recently, she has premiered new compositions by Ricardo Lorenz and Miguel del Aguila.
As a member of Gunther Schuller's New England Ragtime Ensemble, Ms. Jutt toured throughout Europe, the US, and the former USSR, and recorded for the Angel, Golden Crest, and GM labels. Her first solo recording was released on GM Records. More recently, Ms. Jutt has released a collaborative project of Brahms sonatas, entitled Stolen Moments, on Centaur Records, with pianist Jeffrey Sykes. She also produced the successful UW-Madison recordings, Postcards from Madison, Volumes I and II.
A devoted teacher, Ms. Jutt is Professor of Flute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and performs as principal flutist with the Madison Symphony and as a member of the Wingra Woodwind Quintet. Ms. Jutt has also served as Professor of Flute at Florida State University. She received graduate and undergraduate degrees at the New England Conservatory, where her teachers were Paula Robison and James Pappoutsakis. An additional year of intensive studies were completed at Marlboro, Vermont with Marcel Moyse.
Stephanie Jutt has served on the board of the National Flute Association and also as the Program Chair for its annual convention in Nashville in August,2004. She recently co-founded a new committee for the NFA, the Career and Artistic Development Committee, and designed a two-day workshop at the 2010 NFA convention in Anaheim, California.
Since 2007, Stephanie Jutt has been a recipient of a major grant from the Kaufmann Foundation. With guidance from the UW-Madison Office of Corporate Relations, the UW-Madison Arts Institute, and School of Music Director John Schaffer, Stephanie Jutt created a five-fold initiative in arts entrepreneurship at UW-Madison, called Arts Enterprise. She produced a two-day symposium on all aspects of entrepreneurship in the arts, and created a new course entitled ART AS BUSINESS AS ART, which she co-taught with Andrew Taylor, director of the UW-Madison Business School’s MBA program in Arts Administration. A competition for student artists, entitled New Arts Venture Challenge, is being offered for the third year in 2010-11. The UW-Madison Arts Enterprise Student Association was also formed under her direction, and is a unifying force serving all students in the arts at UW-Madison. Finally, the creation of a website, artsenterprise.wisc.edu, has been of great importance to centralize all arts entrepreneurship activities at UW-Madison. Using her great capacity for innovation, Stephanie Jutt has developed Arts Enterprise as an initiative at UW-Madison to help artists create and execute viable lifelong career strategies.
